This week in the sensory room .........It's Christmas!

Christmas is just around the corner so we are getting festive in the sensory room this week. For literacy we are reading 'Lollipop Land' a Christmas poem by 'Garnett Ann Shultz', which I found on the internet. To make the poem more meaningful for my learners, I am using different sensory props for each line of the poem. To start the poem I play the main title theme from the 'Home Alone' soundtrack, this is a very atmospheric and magical piece of music. I then put a little sweet flavoured lip balm on my students lips (if allowed) and support them feel the giant lollipop (object of reference for the poem).

In the poem there is peppermint sea, for this I spray around peppermint essential oil, which has been diluted in water and added to a spray bottle. I then support my students enjoy to put their feet in, and enjoy the warm massaging foot spa.

The peppermint sea is neath the beautiful shade of the bubble gum tree. To create the bubble gum tree I used a projection umbrella (you can use any umbrella) and hung Christmas baubles and long necklace beads. The grass that grows in 'Lollipop Land' is spearmint green, for this part of the poem I just tickle up and down the students legs to represent the grass. The blue of the sky is a heaven supreme, for this part I use I lovely piece of see through blue material, wafting it gently over their heads, letting them enjoy sitting under it for a while........this often turns into a game of 'Peek a Boo'.

In 'Lollipop Land' you walk in the sand that is 'sugary white'. I have used plain sand for this to trickle over the students feet, but it would be a nice idea to replace this with sugar.

I put some blue christmas fairy lights in a box, for the candy tipped stars that shine through the night. I use a switch and switch box, so that my students can switch the lights on and off independently.

If you would like to view the rest of this poem it is available on the TES website...just click on the link below to download the poem and my ideas for sensory resources to use alongside it
